The drainage system of Delhi-NCR has been exposed in the first rain. The roof of Terminal-1 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has also collapsed. As soon as the information was received, 3 fire engines rushed to the spot and took charge. One person died in this accident.
The first monsoon rain in Delhi-NCR has brought relief as well as trouble for the people. After heavy rains, the roads are filled with water. At the same time, one person has died and 6 people have been injured due to the collapse of the parking roof at Delhi Airport Terminal-1.
In fact, amid heavy rains, there was a queue of vehicles at Terminal 1 in the morning, when suddenly the parking roof collapsed and many vehicles got trapped in it. There was panic among the people present there and they immediately called emergency services for help. Officials said that apart from the roof, ‘beams’ also fell, due to which the cars parked in the ‘pick-up and drop’ area of the terminal (an area where vehicles carrying passengers are parked) were damaged.
Declaration Of Compensation
To take stock of the situation after the accident, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu himself reached Terminal One and took all the information from the officials. After this, he spoke to the media and while announcing compensation for the family of the deceased and the injured in the accident, he said, ‘The family of the deceased will be given a compensation of Rs 20 lakh while the injured will be given Rs 3 lakh. The safety of the passengers is our priority.’
The Injured Were Admitted To Medanta Hospital
Delhi’s Chief Fire Officer said that 06 people are injured and have been admitted to Medanta Airport. He said, ‘At 0650 am, a message came from ADO Ravinder that the airport shed has collapsed, due to which 08 people are trapped and injured, who were rescued by PCR/CATS and taken to Medanta Hospital and one person is trapped, who was taken out dead.’
The fire department said they received a call about the roof collapse at around 5:30 am. They said at least four fire engines were rushed to the spot to control the situation. Indira Gandhi International Airport has three terminals – T1, T2 and T3. Only domestic flights operate from Terminal-1.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI) Usha Rangnani said flights headed towards the T-1 departure point of the Indira Gandhi International Airport were diverted to the T-1 arrival point at the CISF check post.
Vehicles Were Also Damaged
Amid heavy rains on Friday morning, a portion of the roof of Delhi airport’s Terminal-1 collapsed on cars, including taxis, injuring six people, Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials said. They said a search operation was underway to ensure no one else was trapped in the damaged vehicles. Apart from the roofing sheets, support beams also fell, damaging cars parked in the terminal’s pick-up and drop area.He said the injured people have been admitted to a hospital. Officials said one of the six people was rescued from the car on which an iron beam had fallen. Three fire engines were rushed to the airport after the DFS received a call about the incident at around 5.30 am. Civil Aviation Minister K. Ramamohan Naidu said in a post on X that he was personally monitoring the situation and the injured people had been admitted to a hospital.
Check-In Counters Closed
Meanwhile, Delhi Airport clarified after the accident and said, ‘Due to heavy rains, a part near Terminal 1 collapsed today. Some people have been injured and the injured are being helped and medical aid is being given to them. Due to this, all flights operating from Terminal 1 have been temporarily canceled. Keeping in mind security reasons, check-in counters have been closed. We regret this incident and apologize for the inconvenience caused by it.’ There has been no impact on the arrival of aircraft.

28 Flights Affected
Due to the accident, flights from Terminal-1 have been temporarily halted. As a precaution, the check-in counter has been closed. Fire engines are engaged in rescue operations at the spot. A total of 28 flights have been affected so far. Due to bad weather, a total of 28 flights have been cancelled since 12 midnight while 12 arriving flights have been affected.

Let us tell you that after the rain in the National Capital Region, there has been heavy waterlogging in many areas of Delhi and surrounding areas. At some places, vehicles could be seen almost half submerged in rain water. Safdarjung recorded 228.1 mm of rain during the last 24 hours till 8:30 am today.
