PM Narendra Modi is expected to visit Russia on July 8-9, where he will participate in the annual India-Russia Summit. This will be Modi’s first bilateral visit in his third term and his first visit to Russia since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022. During this visit, discussions will cover bilateral, regional, and global issues, including military partnerships and production. The issue of Indians stranded in Russia could also be addressed. Following his visit to Russia, PM Modi will travel to Austria, marking the first visit by an Indian PM to Austria since 1983.
PM Modi’s trip to Russia will be his second foreign visit in his third term, following his attendance at the G7 Summit in Italy. He is visiting Moscow at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Ministry of External Affairs has stated that the two leaders will discuss bilateral issues as well as regional and global matters. The Russia-Ukraine war, which has significantly impacted the global economy, will be a key topic of discussion. Modi has previously conveyed to Putin that this is not the era for war. India’s balanced stance in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has been notable, as demonstrated by its participation in the recent Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland, although India did not sign the proposal, calling it a one-sided dialogue that excluded Russia.
India is the third-largest importer of oil from Russia, and despite sanctions from the US and Western countries, India has continued importing oil from Russia. The cheap oil from Russia has helped stabilize India’s economy and inflation, particularly important during election times. After his visit to Russia, PM Modi will head to Austria, marking the first visit by an Indian PM to Austria since Indira Gandhi in 1983. This visit will focus on strengthening bilateral relations between India and Austria.
