A malfunction in the pressurization system forced the Korean Air airliner to make an emergency U-turn and land after descending more than 25,000 feet. The Independent claims that on June 22, 2024, at around 16:45 local time, flight KE189 took off from Seoul’s Incheon International Airport (ICN) and headed for Taiwan’s Taichung International Airport (RMQ).
But just 50 minutes into the flight, the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft began to rapidly descend and in about 15 minutes it fell about 26,900 feet. FL360aero claims that during the plane’s flight over Jeju Island, the message “Pressure system (aircraft pressure control function) abnormality” flashed.
As a result, oxygen masks were installed inside the plane’s cabin as several passengers experienced hyperventilation and ear pain. When the oxygen masks were removed during the plane’s landing, one passenger told the Taipei Times that children on board the plane were crying.
Another passenger reported feeling uneasy as the flight attendants were still seated and the plane seemed to be suspended in mid-air. 17 individuals were examined at medical facilities upon arrival in Taichung, Taiwan, and were discharged without any serious injuries, including nosebleeds.
All “people affected by this incident” received an apology from Korean Air, along with a statement saying, “We are fully cooperating with all relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. We have provided full assistance to affected passengers, including accommodation, meals and travel plans.
On the morning of June 23, the flight was resumed using another aircraft, about 19 hours later than the original scheduled departure time. According to the Taipei Times, passengers who arrived at Taichung International Airport expressed fear and said they would postpone the flight for some time.
According to a Korean Air representative, the airline is investigating the pressurization system malfunction in detail and plans to fix any maintenance problems before the plane can be put back into operation.
A series of accidents involving Boeing aircraft caused the plane to be heavily pressurized, and it malfunctioned during the flight.
