Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday accused Defense Minister Rajnath Singh of lying in Parliament about the financial assistance provided to the family of an Agniveer in case of his death. He said Rajnath Singh should apologize to the Parliament, the country, and the army. Rahul Gandhi also released a video of the late Agniveer Ajay Singh’s father from Punjab, where he claimed that his family did not receive ₹1 crore in financial assistance, contrary to what the government had stated in Parliament.
What is Rahul Gandhi Allegations to Agniveer Case(Indian Army):
Congress Leader Rahul Gandh said, “On one hand, you give 6 months of training, while on the other hand, Chinese soldiers receive 5 years of training. You put them with a rifle in front of the enemy, creating fear in their hearts. You create discord between soldiers by saying one will get a pension and another will not, one will be honored as a martyr and another will not, and then you call yourselves patriots. Mr. Speaker, one man outweighs everyone else. Mr. Speaker, I request that misleading the House with false statements should not be allowed. If any Agniveer soldier is martyred during service or security, financial assistance of ₹1 crore is provided to their family. “
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted on X, stating that he had mentioned in his speech in Parliament that protecting the truth is the foundation of every religion, but in response, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh lied in Parliament about the financial assistance given to the family of the martyred Agniveer. On July 1, Rahul Gandhi had also raised questions about the Agniveer scheme during the discussion on the President’s address in the Lok Sabha. He claimed that the Modi government does not honor Agniveers as martyrs and does not provide them with compensation.
However, the Indian Army itself has now strongly responded to Rahul Gandhi’s claims. The Indian Army has categorically denied Rahul Gandhi’s claims through a post on X. The Indian Army stated that they salute the supreme sacrifice of Agniveer Ajay Kumar, and his funeral was conducted with full military honors. The Indian Army mentioned that ₹89 lakhs had already been paid to Ajay’s family, and as per the provisions of the Agniveer scheme, an ex-gratia amount of approximately ₹77 lakhs and other benefits would be paid immediately after police verification and final settlement of the account. The total amount will be around ₹1.65 crore.
It has been reiterated that the benefits provided to the next of kin of deceased soldiers, including Agniveers, are promptly disbursed. While Rahul Gandhi is accusing the government of injustice towards Agniveers, the Indian Army’s response serves as a strong rebuttal. It remains to be seen whether Rahul Gandhi will apologize for his statement or stand by it.
