Pavel Durov’s arrest in Paris triggered international protests.
The United Arab Emirates announced late Monday that it had asked the French government to allow access to Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, who is currently in police custody in Paris.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said Durov, a French-Emirati of Russian descent, was arrested on Saturday evening and remains in custody as part of an investigation into allegations of trafficking in child pornography and violations of the Telegram messaging platform.
“The UAE is closely monitoring the situation of its citizens. Telegram founder Pavel Durov, who was arrested by French authorities at Paris-Le Bourget airport, said the UAE has sent a request to the French government to provide him with all necessary consular services in an urgent manner,” the Abu Dhabi foreign ministry said.
Durov’s arrest triggered international protests, with self-proclaimed liberal advocates such as billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk condemning the arrest. French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that his decision to arrest Durov was “not a political decision.”
Telegram has millions of users worldwide and is a vital communications tool for political activists, gangs and militants fighting in eastern Ukraine.
