NEET row over paper leak and irregularities: NTA released city/centre wise results of all candidates (withholding their identity) on its official website on Saturday afternoon. Hearing on these petitions to resume on July 22
While most of the top scorers in the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2024 were from traditional coaching centres, many from other cities such as Lucknow, Indore, Kanpur, Agra and Aligarh scored 700+, making it a “silver lining”, the National Testing Agency (NTA) said in a note a day after releasing the city and centre-wise results of the medical entrance exam on its website.
The NTA has declared centre and city-wise results for medical entrance exam NEET-UG, which has come under the scanner due to paper leaks and irregularities. The results, which were first declared on June 4, were released in this format following an order by the Supreme Court (SC) while hearing petitions alleging irregularities in the conduct of the exam. The Supreme Court, while hearing the matter on July 18, asked the NTA to publish city/centre-wise results of all candidates (withholding their identity) on its official website by Saturday noon for transparency. Hearing on these petitions will resume on July 22.
The NEET-UG was held on May 5 at 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 cities abroad, with a total of 23.33 lakh students appearing for it. The exam requires a minimum of 720 marks and those scoring 700 and above are eligible to get seats in top government medical colleges like Delhi AIIMS.
According to an analysis of the results by the NTA, out of the 23.33 lakh students who appeared for the exam, 2,321 scored 700 or more marks. These students are spread across 1,404 centres across the country and abroad. These 1,404 centres are again spread across 276 cities and 25 states/UTs. “Such a large spread suggests that many candidates from traditional education centres have also managed to find a place in the list of toppers in NEET 2024,” it said.
The results numbers released on Saturday showed that the top scorers were concentrated in exam centres located in coaching centres such as Rajkot (Gujarat), Siliguri (Rajasthan), Malappuram (Kerala), Bengaluru Urban (Karnataka), Kottayam (Kerala), Surat (Kerala). Gujarat), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Howrah (West Bengal) and Kota (Rajasthan).
RANGE OF MARKS AND CITY SPREAD
700 and above marks
“It is true that many students hailing from traditional centres of education like Siliguri, Kota and Kottayam have managed to score 700 or more marks. However, the silver lining is that many students hailing from other cities have also managed to come in this category,” the note read.
For instance, the NTA analysis shows that 35 students from Lucknow, 27 students from Kolkata, 25 students from Latur, 20 students from Nagpur, 19 students from Faridabad, 18 students from Nangal, 17 students from Cuttack and Kanpur, 16 each from Kolhapur, Noida, Sahibzada and Ajit Singh Nagar, 13 each from Agra and Aligarh, 10 each from Akola and Patiala, 8 from Davanagere and 7 from Banaskantha scored 700 or more marks.
“Given these data, the alignment of the NEET syllabus with the higher level curriculum has started bearing fruit,” the note said.
The NTA has developed the syllabus for the NEET exam based on the NCERT textbooks of Class 12. This year, the agency reduced the syllabus for the exam by 22-25%, including concept-based chapters in Biology and one other subject, which also impacted the improvement in the overall performance of students this year, the agency told the court.
