Donald Trump’s youngest son, Barron, grew up in the White House but largely stayed out of the spotlight.
Shortly after the former president married his wife Melania Trump in 2005, the couple learned they were expecting a baby. Barron was born on March 20, 2006, becoming Donald’s fifth child and Melania’s first.
Barron spent his childhood in his family’s opulent penthouse in New York City, attending prestigious private schools on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. When Donald was elected president and began his term in January 2017, Barron and Melania stayed in Manhattan so he could finish out the school year. That summer, he enrolled at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Maryland and officially moved into the White House with the family.
While Donald’s older children — Ivanka, Donald Trump Jr., Eric and Tiffany — have played a big role in their father’s presidency, Barron’s privacy has been largely protected.
Amid the twice-impeached former president’s legal troubles — which include lawsuits and investigations at the state and federal levels — a source told People in March 2023, “Barron has always been the number one priority in [Melania’s] life.”
“Of course she’s worried and concerned about the legal issues, but she’s doing nothing more to protect Barron now than she ever has,” the insider added. “She’s always put him first. Good mom.”
In May 2024, Barron graduates from high school and begins his first year at New York University in the autumn.
Here’s everything you need to know about Donald and Melania Trump’s son Barron.
Donald was surprised to see what Melania was expecting
In 2005, Donald and Melania found out they were expecting their first child six months after their wedding. Recalling the moment she told Donald she was pregnant, Melania admitted her husband was a bit shocked by the news.
“He came home [one day last August], and I told him I was going to be a father. And his reaction… he had to accept it at first. It was a real surprise. And then he was so happy,” she shared with People.
Donald added, “I was expecting we were going to have children, so I wasn’t completely surprised. But I was surprised by the speed of it. It happened so quickly.”
Donald Trump’s youngest son was born in March 2006
On March 20, 2006, Melania gave birth to Barron, who weighed 8 lbs. 8 ounces. Donald decided not to be in the delivery room, saying he thought it would be “easier” for Melania if he wasn’t there. Melania later said her eight-hour labor was actually “very easy.”
Donald told People after the birth, “Everyone is perfect. He’s so happy, it’s great.”
Donald chose Barron’s name because he had always loved it, but his other sons hadn’t had the opportunity to use it. Melania was on board — but at the last minute, Donald had second thoughts about the name.
“It’s a name I’ve always wanted, but I’ve never had the courage to use it. I pitched the idea to Melania, and then I was going to pick it at the end, and she said, ‘You can’t take that! I called him Barron when he was in my belly, and you take that,'” Donald said on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
He attended school in New York, Maryland, and Florida
Growing up, Barron attended several prestigious schools. While living in New York City, he attended Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. After Donald became president in January 2017, Barron visited N.Y.C. and had just finished the school year.
During Barron’s senior year at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, he spent his entire fifth grade year traveling to Washington.
A group of about 80 students accompanied Barron (along with teachers and Secret Service agents) on a field trip to the White House, where they met Barron’s father. The group also visited the nation’s capital and stayed overnight at a hotel before returning home.
Later in May 2017, it was announced that Barron would be attending St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland.
Education at St. Andrew’s costs Trump $40,000 a year. The Obamas, Bushes, and Clintons — including Obama himself — raised their children in D.C., and Barron’s admission marked a departure from the precedent set by earlier First Families, who sent him to Sidwell Friends, a private Quaker school located in Bethesda, Maryland.
After the end of Donald’s presidency in 2021, it was revealed that Barron would attend Oxbridge Academy in Palm Beach, Florida, where he will graduate with the class of 2024.
He was nervous about going to the White House
He shared that when Donald was first elected president, Barron was hesitant about leaving his life in N.Y.C. and moving to the White House. He explained that the then 9-year-old loved New York and his school, and that the move was “totally life-changing.”
Donald Trump tells PEOPLE how son Barron found the White House move ‘a little scary’
Donald said, “He has a good school in New York where he has a lot of friends. But if it happens, I tell him that daddy helps people, he can help kids like himself and that makes him happy. He’s a 9-year-old boy, he’s strong and smart, he knows that and he sees that.”

Former First Daughters Chelsea Clinton and Jenna Bush Hager came to his defense
While his father was in office, the grandson faced online attacks.
Former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton came to his defense. Amid the online bullying, Chelsea has tweeted on multiple occasions asking others to give her a chance to move on without being so critical.
Clinton responded to a negative article about Barron by saying, “The media and everyone else should leave Barron Trump alone and let him live the private childhood he deserves.”
Another former First Daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, explained how the attacks on Barron made her “mad” because “the truth is, obviously, Barron Trump did not ask his father to run for president. It was not his decision.”
He speaks both English and Slovenian.
Barron is bilingual and speaks both English and Melania’s native Slovenian. Melania says that as a boy, Barron often called his grandmother and spoke exclusively in Slovenian. While Melania has been a supporter of Barron’s multilingualism, she said Barron and her husband have the same opinion about which languages should be used in public.
“My point is that the more languages you speak, the better, but when you come to America, you speak English,” she told People.
Melania is incredibly protective of him
Throughout Melania’s career as a model, she kept to herself. Even as First Lady, she spent time with her family rather than friends. Now that Donald is out of office, sources have told PEOPLE that Melania is still very private and is keeping a close eye on Barron.
“Melania’s friends are her family,” a source shared in 2023. “Many Mar-a-Lago club members and others know and see Melania. But they are not friends. They don’t get together, they don’t hang out, they don’t socialize. She is always surrounded by her family, and she loves Barron very much, which is nothing new,” the insider said.
Melania’s parents, who live at the Trump family estate in Mar-a-Lago, “are close to Barron and have played an important role in his upbringing,” the insider said.
In March 2024, a social and political source told People that “Melania’s main job is to take care of Barron.”
“Barron is shy and reserved and she has been a great mother to him for so many years,” the source said. Among the charity work she has done, standing up for family issues has been a priority.
Donald says Barron is 6 feet, 7 inches tall
According to comments made by Donald at his presidential campaign headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa, in January 2024, his teenage son is already 6 feet, 7 inches tall. He credits Barron’s height to the food that his late grandmother, Melania’s mother, Amalija Knauss, used to make for him.
During his speech, Donald called Barron a “special boy” and said, “”I said you would be a basketball player. I really like soccer dad,” he said. “I thought… at your height I like basketball but you can’t talk about all that,” the Daily Mail reported.
He attended his first campaign rally in July 2024
Barron joined his father on the campaign trail in July 2024. Donald, who was in Doral, Florida, said from the stage that it was his son’s first rally.
“You’re very famous, he’s probably even more famous than Dan and Eric,” he said. “So Barron, it’s nice to have you. [His] life was very pleasant, easy. Now, it’s changed a little bit.”
He is studying at New York University
On September 4, 2024, NYU security officials confirmed to PEOPLE that Barron had arrived at Manhattan College. He was seen outside the library with Secret Service agents.
