Effective 1st July 2024, the Telecommunication Act 2023 has come into effect, bringing significant changes regarding the use of SIM cards. Now, a maximum of nine SIM cards can be issued per ID. Acquiring more SIM cards may attract penalties ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh. If someone purchases a SIM card through fraudulent means, they could face penalties up to ₹50 lakhs or imprisonment for up to 3 years.

Under the new telecom law, customers will find relief from spam calls. Telecom companies will now require the customer’s consent to send promotional messages. Telecom companies must establish mechanisms for online complaints under the new law.
In emergencies, the government can suspend telecom services or networks. The transmission of messages can be intercepted by the government under the Telecommunication Act 2023, which was passed in Parliament last December. This new law replaces the 123-year-old Indian Telegraph Act and the Indian Wireless Telegraph Act of 1933.
